Capt. Luis Cortes

Growing up as a young child in South Florida Luis’s dad was an offshore guide so Luis was naturally led to where he is today. His passion for fishing started as soon as he was able to hold a rod. He grew up in Miami fishing offshore and would travel with his family to the Florida Keys almost every weekend which is where he now makes his home. Luis said the first time his father took him sight fishing as a child he was hooked to say the least. He couldn’t get enough of the hunting aspect of sight fishing and still to this day it is his favorite way of catching fish. Luis said,” I will never forget the first fly rod my Dad bought me. Him and I would spend hours in the back yard perfecting the cast.

As a fishing guide, Luis truly enjoys watching his clients pull on a fish that they only dreamt about catching. Luis says I love what I do for a living and know how important it is to show my clients the best possible time on the water whether it be a fly angler getting as many shots as possible at a stringing tarpon or a young child having his rod bent all day. Luis’s passion fishing shows. Luis won the 2014 Herman Lucerne Tournament guide grand champion and team grand champion.

Captain Luis specializes in light tackle and fly fishing for Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Sharks, Trout, and many more.

Capt. Robert Schemmel

Born and raised in South Florida, Captain Robert Schemmel began bass fishing the canals of Fort Lauderdale as a young boy. While others were playing in the streets, Robert was mastering his fishing skills. In 2000, during a chance meeting on a visit to Homestead, he was offered an opportunity to commercial fish with another captain. This is where his love for the ocean truly began. Robert spent all of his available time traveling from Ft. Lauderdale to commercial fish off the coast of the Florida Keys, learning the numerous techniques to catch many different species of fish. After years of dedication to commercial fishing, he relocated to Homestead and decided to acquire his captains license allowing him to share his passion with others. This is where the adventures began.

Captain Robert Schemmel has taken anyone from the experienced fishermen to first timers who have never fished a day in their lives. Each and every time the experience has always been an adventure. His knowledge of fishing allows him to adapt to any situation, making every trip a fun filled-time for everyone involved. The Florida Keys, stretching 120 miles from the mainland of South Florida, are bordered by the Gulf of Mexico with patch reefs on the west, while having the only living coral barrier reef in the United States on the east providing a variety of options for fishing. On a typical day trip off the coast of the Florida Keys, you could be 20 miles offshore in depths of 1000 feet or more catching tuna, dolphin (mahi-mahi), wahoo or various deep-water species. A day spent on the reef located just 5 miles from the coast could result in a great dinner catch of yellow tail, mangrove snapper or grouper, just to name a few. For those looking to pull on something with some weight behind it, there is always the opportunity to catch a shark or even a tarpon.

He specializes in fly fishing and light tackle, either offshore and reef fishing or backcountry and flats fly-fishing. Capt. Frank’s passion lies in the hunt. The diversity in the local Islamorada fishing and wide range of species, has had Capt. Frank hooked since childhood as he targets local gamefish, bonefish, tarpon, permit, sailfish, tuna, dolphin and wahoo. It is this passion that leads him to want to share these experiences with others, seeking a memorable fishing day on the waters of the Florida Keys or the backcountry of Everglades National Park.

Whether you are a first-time angler, bringing your family and kids fishing in Islamorada, or a seasoned tournament angler, Capt. Frank can tailor a day to exceed your expectations. He is equally committed to both working hard to help you catch fish and to making sure you enjoy your time on the water.

According to Capt. Frank, there’s nothing like standing on the platform of a flats-boat watching a tailing bonefish or a jumping tarpon in the sun’s glistening trail through the ocean, or to see a school of laid up tarpon in the slick calm of early morning.

At the end of the day, yes, it’s about the fishing, but it’s also about the adventures and memories my guests take home with them.”
Fly fishing affords a unique opportunity to connect with the toughest species South Florida waters have to offer in a truly “mano a mano” contest of skills and persistence. Aboard Capt. Raul’s 17′ Dolphin Super Skiff he carries the finest saltwater fly fishing and spinning tackle in order to provide his guests with the equipment that can get the job done right without compromise.
Islamorada fishing has something for everyone. While he specializes in guiding seasoned fly fisherman to tournament winning catches, Capt. Raul is a fisherman first and genuinely loves sharing the sport of saltwater fishing with visiting anglers who have never experienced it before. Capt. Raul says,” I enjoy teaching the art of fly fishing and saltwater angling as much as I enjoy guiding. Whether your goal may be to catch a specific species, or just to catch some great fish for dinner, rest assured my goal is to make sure you have an amazing trip. My priority is to ensure that our time together on the water is exciting, refreshing and above all else- memorable”.

Whether you’re fishing in saltwater for the very first time or ready for the shallow water angling challenge of a lifetime come join Capt. Raul Montoro for a back-country trip and let him show you Florida fishing at its finest.

Capt. Mark Byrnes

Capt. Mark Byrnes is a Florida native fishing guide, born in Miami in 1953. He started fishing in the Florida Keys when he was a young child. Spending weekends fishing day and night on the rickety wooden catwalks attached to the old bridges he was usually successful in bringing home snapper and grouper for his family to eat. For his own enjoyment he discovered jumping tarpon and the thrill of seeing these monsters explode out the water.

In the 70’s and 80’s offshore fishing in small center consoles was his passion. However, he always liked to explore the flats and backcountry of Florida Bay and the Everglades every chance he got. Slowly but surely, he became hooked on the inshore scene.

Capt. Mark has been a USCG licensed professional guide for approximately 20 years now and specializes in “live bait” tarpon fishing. He also tailors’ trips to his client’s desires and targets snook, redfish, trout, snapper and sharks.
Angler House Marina’s Captain Mark Bryne is very patient with beginners and kids of all ages and also has the skills and experience to sight fish with expert casters.

Capt. Brian Helms

I have always loved to fish. I grew up in Homestead, South Florida and began fishing in canals and other waters close to home as a child. At the age of 13, I purchased my first boat and began to explore the areas of Biscayne Bay and the Everglades. My love for fly fishing grew, as did the areas I fished. I obtained my captains license when I was 17 years old and began my chartering business fishing with customers from Homestead down to Islamorada in the Keys.
I fell in love with fly fishing. Although I have the equipment, knowledge and ability to provide a terrific trip for customers pursuing light tackle fishing, my passion is for fly-fishing and if this is something you have ever dreamed of trying, or if you’re a well-seasoned fly fisherperson, I will do my best to make your trip special. I love to share my expertise and passion with someone interested in learning – you don’t have to know anything at all in fact – I can bring both fly and light tackle and spend as much time as needed teaching the art of fly fishing, but we would also have the ability to pick up a spinning rod. Your trip can be personalized to whatever you would like to ensure that you have an amazing time. I continued to explore and learn and now am able to provide backcountry guided fishing trips from Biscayne Bay down to Key West. I guide approximately 220 days a year on one of my two backcountry skiffs. One is a smaller Waterman with a 40hp Yamaha that is able to go in very shallow waters, and the other is a 16′ Dolphin Super Skiff with a 90hp Evinrude, both are excellent, well-kept vessels which will get us to our spots with comfort and ease.
In 2004, I relocated to the heart of Islamorada, the Fly-Fishing Capital of the World. I am a trailer guide’ meaning that my boats generally stay on a trailer, making me mobile to be able to move to wherever the fishing is at its best. My home base is right here in Islamorada at the Angler House Marina, an excellent put-in spot that allows for easy access to much of Islamorada’s best fly fishing. I have had the opportunity to fish in many local tournaments and some of my proudest accomplishments include winning Grand Champion in the Redbone Tournament, Grand Champion in the Baybone, Grand Champion in the Key West Slam, Grand Champion two years in the Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament, and most recently, both in 2013, Grand Champion Guide in the Hawley and Grand Champion Guide during the 50th Anniversary of the premier tarpon fly-fishing tournament, the Gold Cup.
I guide anglers from novice to expert and specialize in those anglers that prefer fly fishing. Whether this is your first day on the water or your 100th, come down for a fun day of fly fishing with me, Capt. Brian Helms!
